World's largest Airbus Beluga Super Transporter makes first lands at Mumbai airport

Airbus Beluga, the whale-shaped super transporter aircraft made its grand appearance at the Mumbai Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport (CSMIA) on November 22 leaving airport staff and passengers awestruck. The images of one of the largest aircraft have surfaced all over the internet and have left netizens stunned. One of the qualities of this super transporter is that it is whale shaped and stands out in the sky as it feels like a whale has taken over the skies. This aircraft has not only become the center of attraction amongst air travelers due to its large size but is unique in itself.
Also known as the A300-600ST Super Transporter, the Airbus Beluga offers a unique way to transport oversized air cargo. According to the Airbus website, these transport planes have been operating for the company's own industrial airlift needs since the mid-1990s, and are progressively being replaced by a fleet of six new-generation BelugaXL versions.
The official handle of CSMIA posted some photos of the huge plane, saying it left everyone "awestruck".
The aircraft, carrying aircraft parts and outsize cargo, draws attraction for its unique design that resembles a whale. The average length of the carrier is 56 metres and its height 17 metres. It was seen at the Kolkata airport on Sunday around 12.30 am when it landed for refuelling and crew rest.
Incidentally, Embraer E195-E2, the largest jet in the E2 family, had made its maiden visit to the Mumbai Airport on Sunday.
The name Airbus 'Beluga' comes from the Beluga whale. The Airbus Beluga is used to transport big and heavy objects such as vehicles and different space programs. The large aircraft have been witnessing additional demand.
The images of Airbus Beluga landing at the CSMIA were shared by the airport’s official Twitter handle. “Look who made a pitstop at @CSMIA_Official ! The Airbus Beluga Super Transporter made its first appearance at #MumbaiAirport and left us all awestruck. Tell us what you think of its unique design.” the tweet read.
Further, on November 20, the whale-shaped super transporter Airbus Beluga landed at Kolkata's Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose International Airport. Kolkata airport took to Twitter to share the news amongst the netizens along with pictures of one of the world's largest planes.
The rare visitor was also spotted at Kolkata airport on Sunday where it had come for refuelling and crew rest, Kolkata airport tweeted sharing pictures of the “majestic beast”. On Sunday, the plane landed at Kolkata airport, instantly becoming an exhibit for the people flying in and out of the city.The whale-shaped plane arrived at the Kolkata airport from Ahmedabad around 12.30 am for refuelling and crew rest.
It is one of the largest cargo planes in the world, with its nose shaped like a Beluga whale. It offers customers with large cargo transport solutions for a variety of sectors, including space, energy, military, aeronautics, maritime and humanitarian sectors.
Here’s all you need to know about Airbus Beluga:
1) At a length of 56.15 metres, Airbus Beluga is capable of handling cargo for various sectors, including military, maritime, space, and humanitarian, among others.

2) It has a height of 17.25 metres, while the wing span is a stunning 44.24 metres. As one of the latest models, these super transporters offer a semi-automated main deck cargo loading system, making them efficient to handle payloads.
3) As per Airbus, Belugas are capable of handling outsized cargo of up to 7.1m in width and 6.7m in height and possess “the world's largest interior cross-section of any transport aircraft".
4) Airbus is a familiar name in the aerospace industry, a company based in Europe. While Belugas have been part of Airbus’s operations since the mid-1990s, they were launched as a service in January.
5) Airbus also revealed that their first launch actually took place at the end of December 2021. The mission was headed to Japan for an “undisclosed” customer which Beluga stopped for refuelling at three places, Poland, Russia, and Korea.
