Former international hockey player Gopal Bhengra (75) breathed his last on Monday(09-08-2021) after prolonged illness. Bhengra had represented India at the 1978 World Cup in Argentina. Chief Minister Hemant Soren said: "Received the sad news of the passing away of former international hockey player Gopal Bhengra Ji. Gopal Bhengra Ji always held the country''s head high - be it on the borders of the country or country''s representation in hockey. May God give peace to the departed soul and give strength to the bereaved family to bear the loss." Bhengra, 75, who served in the Army was admitted to a private hospital in Ranchi. He had played against Argentina and Pakistan in the World Cup. 

"Hockey India extends its deepest condolences to Gopal Bhengra's family. Gopal was an important member of the 1978 World Cup side and his contributions to Indian Hockey will always be remembered," he said. "May Gopal's family and friends have the strength to pass through this tough time," he added.

No one may remember the name of this player, but at one time this player was known for his brilliant game. Bhengra, a resident of Uyur village of Torpa block of Khunti district, used to do farming at the end of his life.

Bhengra was a hockey coach in school
Gopal Bhengra was the coach of Hockey Academy of SS High School in Khunti for two years. Then he used to get an allowance of one thousand rupees. Bhengra used to say that after leaving the game of hockey, someone would ask you, no matter how big a player you are, whereas in other sports there is no such thing.

Sunil Gavaskar had helped
There was a time when the family of Gopal Bhengra was going through a very difficult time. To run his family, this veteran had to do stone-breaking work. When this news appeared in a newspaper, Sunil Gavaskar came to know about it. After which the cricket legend decided to help Bhengra financially. Gavaskar kept sending him 15 thousand rupees every month till the last moment. Gopal used to say that hockey completely rejected him, but great cricketer Sunil Gavaskar adopted him.
