India Lose 1-2 In Women's Hockey semifinal ,to play Great Britain for bronze medal

By - Siju Kuriyedam Sreekumar -- Wednesday, August 04, 2021 , 06:05 PM
The Indian team fought and fought hard but could not prevent defeat as they lost 1-2 to Argentina after taking a 1-0 lead through Gurjit Kaur. The Indians will next play Great Britain in the bronze medal match.

After putting up a brilliant fight, Rani Rampal and her team endured a tough 1-2 defeat against world number 3 Argentina in their semi-final match at the Tokyo Olympics. Despite Gurjit Kaur opening the scoring, it was Argentina captain Maria Noel Barrionuevo's brace that denied India a shot at history as the side lost the Women's Hockey Semifinal 1-2 at the Oi Hockey Stadium in Japan. Next, India will take on 2016 Olympic champions Great Britain in the bronze medal match on August 6. Right after that, Argentina will play the Netherlands in the gold medal match.
Gurjit Kaur scored the lone goal for India, while Argentine skipper Maria Noel Barrionuevo netted twice. Rani Rampal and her unit scripted a historic upset earlier this week, when they defeated three-time champions Australia to secure a last four berth, making them the first Indian unit to achieve the feat.

India start on a dream note as the side earns the first penalty corner of the match, which is flicked inside the left side of the goal by Gurjit Kaur. India go 1-0 up in the first quarter.

Meanwhile, Argentina is fighting back hard, but India is putting up a great show in defence. However, Argentina have earned their first penalty corner of the match, but the South American side is unable to make anything out of it.

After taking a 1-0 lead, India are maintaining a good possession, despite several circle entries by the opposition. Just before the end of the first quarter, Navneet's head clashes with an Argentine defender, however, we hope this isn't serious for both the players.
