Babul Supriyo quits politics:clarifies 'not joining any party':says will also resign as MP

By - Siju Kuriyedam Sreekumar -- Saturday, July 31, 2021 , 09:45 PM
Kolkata: Former Union Minister and Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Babul Supriyo on Saturday took to Facebook to announce that he has decided to quit politics and resign as an MP as well. He hinted the decision was partly due to him losing the ministerial berth and also differences with the state BJP leadership. Although initially, he dismissed speculations about him joining any other party in the post, expressing his allegiance for the BJP, he was quick to edit that out later.

Earlier, he wrote, "Leaving, Alvida. Spoke to my parents, wife, friends, and after listening to the advice I am saying that I am leaving. Am not going to any other party - TMC, Congress, CPIM, nowhere. I am confirming that nobody has called me. "I am going nowhere. I am a one-team player! Have always supported one team MohunBagan - Have been with only one party - BJP West Bengal. That's it!!", which he later removed.

Babul Supriyo, who had held several portfolios as a minister of state in the Narendra Modi government since 2014, was removed from the position earlier this month following a major cabinet reshuffle.

In a long post written in Bengali on social media, the BJP leader said, "I have made some of you happy, some sad but after a long discussion, am saying am leaving. It’s not possible to stay in politics and do social work. Let me settle myself."

Babul Supriyo served as a Minister of State for Urban Development, Housing and Urban poverty alleviation from November 2014 to July 2016, and Minister of State for Heavy Industries and Public Enterprises from July 2016 to May 2019. He also served as Minister of State for Environment.

The two-time MP from Asansol was among the several ministers who were dropped from the Union Cabinet on 7 July as part of a major rejig in the Union cabinet. He unsuccessfully contested the Assembly polls against Trinamool Congress' Aroop Biswas in the recently concluded 2021 Assembly election in West Bengal.

Besides Supriyo, Bengali leader Debasree Chaudhuri was also dropped as minister during the Cabinet rejig. Four other MPs from West Bengal — Nishit Pramanik, Santanu Thakur, Subhas Sarkar and John Barla — were inducted as minister of state in the current Modi cabinet.

"If someone asks that whether leaving the politics is somehow connected to losing ministry. Yes, then it is true to some extent. Also had differences with the state leadership since the assembly poll campaign,” Supriyo wrote. State BJP president Dilip Ghosh declined to comment on it, news agency reported
