India's Kerala state Already struggling with Covid-19, now on high alert after 14 Zika virus cases reported

By - Siju Kuriyedam Sreekumar -- Friday, July 09, 2021 , 09:45 PM
Health authorities in the Indian state of Kerala have declared a state of alert in all districts after identifying 14 cases of Zika virus. Kerala Health Minister Veena George confirmed the infections in Trivandrum (now Thiruvananthapuram) district. Kerala's neighbouring states are very vigilant now to prevent the Zika Virus spread

The mosquito-borne virus has been linked to shrunken brains in children and a rare auto-immune disease called Guillain-Barre syndrome. Although the virus is mostly spread by mosquitoes, it can also be sexually transmitted.

All new cases have been reported among healthcare workers in the district. Ms George said in a statement that the first identified patient of the virus was a 24-year-old pregnant woman from a town bordering the neighbouring state of Tamil Nadu. She was admitted in the capital city of Trivandrum on 28 June with fever, headache and rashes. She delivered a baby on Wednesday. "Her condition is stable. The delivery was normal. She has no travel history outside the state," Ms George said. This making more issue for CDC team to prevent and control virus spread. Without knowing From where she infected, Its very difficult to control Zika Virus.

The ongoing monsoon rains have turned the affected areas into "breeding ground for the mosquitoes", she told reporters on Friday. Kerala health secretary Dr Rajan Khobragade told that the government had sent teams for "strong surveillance in outbreak areas", making people aware of the disease; following up with pregnant mothers; and counselling couples.

Kerala is battling a continuing second wave of Covid-19 infections with the test positivity rate remaining over 10% for the past two months. India's first case of coronavirus infection was also reported from the state in January 2020. Now kerala's active case again reached country's top position. Kerala, which has been struggling to manage the Covid-19 pandemic in the country, is now facing another major health crisis in the form of the Zika virus.

According to the reports, the first case of the Zika virus was reported from Kerala on Thursday. However, on Friday, Kerala reported 13 more cases of mosquito-borne Zika virus in Thiruvananthapuram, causing a worry to authorities in the state.

The Kerala government said they had sent 19 samples to the institute, out of which 13 were found to be positive for Zika.

The authorities have collected all the samples from Thiruvananthapuram that tested positive for the Zika virus and has been sent to the National Institute of Virology (NIV) in Pune. The samples of a 24-year-old pregnant woman who sought treatment late last month with symptoms like fever, headache, and red marks on the skin, have also been sent to NIV in Pune. Meanwhile, authorities have issued a statewide alert after several cases of the Zika virus was confirmed in Kerala.

The Southern state is already struggling with Covid-19,second wave still in its high, as the state is now reporting the highest number of new cases per day. The state is reporting 10,000 to 15,000 cases daily for the last 2 months, and now has 1.13 lakh active cases, 1000 case more than Maharashtra. Both these states now contribute almost half of the new cases in the country. Kerala's total number of covid case amlost 10% of Country's total Number of Covid case. Covid Death Rate is also very high compared to other states. Kerala's health system is very good compared to many other states in India. Also 100% literacy is there, people are very vigilant about community spread but most of the virus attacks and disease are badly affecting kerala nowadays. This all indicates that some kind of mismanagement or issuess is there in administration or system.

Zika virus was first isolated from monkeys living in the Zika jungle of Uganda in 1947. In 1952, the Zika Virus Disease (ZVD) was identified in humans in Western Africa. ZVD is caused by a virus transmitted primarily by Aedes mosquitoes (AM), mainly Aedes aegypti, the same mosquito that transmits dengue, chikungunya and yellow fever.

"It therefore seems certain that Zika virus attacks human beings in India," they concluded in a paper published in 1953. In 2016 and 2017, the western state of Gujarat reported cases of the Zika virus from the city of Ahmedabad. India reported a Zika outbreak in the western state of Gujarat in 2016-17.
